Microloans for Canadian Entrepreneurs

A microloan is small-scale business financing, typically under $50,000, from non-profit and community lenders rather than banks. They serve businesses too new or too small for commercial lending, often with mentorship attached, and they take weeks rather than days. If you have six months of trading and steady revenue, commercial lending is usually faster and larger.

What a microloan is

A microloan is small-scale business financing, typically under $50,000 and often far less, made by non-profit and community lenders rather than banks. The money is ordinary debt, repaid monthly with interest. What differs is who is lending and why: these organisations exist to fund businesses the commercial market will not reach yet, and they price closer to cost than to risk. Most attach mentorship or advisory support to the loan, which for a first business is frequently worth more than the rate.

The trade is time and size. Microloans take weeks to arrange and cap out below what a trading business usually needs, which is why they serve an earlier stage than most of the business loans market.

Who lends them

Canada's microloan lenders are mostly national non-profits and regional community funds. The programs below were verified on 31 August 2026; terms and eligibility change, so confirm on the program's own page before you apply.

Who qualifies

Microloan lenders assess differently from commercial ones. Revenue and trading history matter less, because most applicants have little of either. What they want instead is a plan they can follow, evidence you have thought about the numbers, and often a connection to whatever community the fund exists to serve. Several programs are open to pre-revenue businesses, which is the single clearest difference from the commercial market, where six months of deposits is the usual floor.

Expect a business plan, a cash-flow forecast, and a conversation. Expect also to be asked what happens if the first plan does not work, and to have a real answer.

What they cost, and what comes with them

Rates sit well below commercial small-business lending, commonly in the single digits to low teens, and terms run longer, which keeps payments small. What comes attached is the part borrowers underrate: mentorship, advisory hours, and in some programs an assigned adviser for the life of the loan. If you are starting your first business, that support is a real part of the value.

Microloan pricing sits well below the legal maximum, but it is worth knowing where that maximum sits before you compare a commercial offer.

If you borrow as a sole proprietor you are a natural person in law, and the 35 percent criminal interest rate cap protects you the same way it protects any personal borrower. If you borrow through a corporation, that protection narrows. Business borrowing by an incorporated company between $10,000 and $500,000 can legally reach 48 percent APR, and above $500,000 there is no legal ceiling at all. None of that means your lender will charge it, and most will not. It means the law stops holding the line where you might assume it does, so the APR in your own agreement is the number that matters.

Microloan against commercial lending

$25,000 over 60 months: a microloan against a commercial term loan

RouteMonthly paymentTotal interestTime to funding
Microloan$518.96 a month$6,137.53 over 60 monthsAbout six weeks
Online business term loan$704.62 a month$17,277.09 over 60 monthsAbout three days

The microloan is much cheaper and much slower, so the choice is whether the business can wait six weeks. The monthly payment is lower too.

Illustrative example, not quoted offers: $25,000 over 60 months at the rates shown. Microloan pricing and terms vary by program and province.

Scale is the other half of the comparison. Across Smarter Loans business loan applications from August 2025 to July 2026, the smallest common purpose was inventory purchases, averaging $59,529. Even that runs above typical microloan ceilings, which is the honest reason microloans serve an earlier stage than most of our market rather than competing with it.

How to apply and how long it takes

  • Pick the program that matches you, by age, region, gender or barrier. These funds have mandates, and applying outside one wastes weeks.
  • Write the plan first. Most programs ask for a business plan and a cash-flow forecast before anything else, and the quality of those decides the outcome more than any credit check.
  • Budget six to eight weeks. Committees meet on schedules, and advisers review before they do.
  • Ask what support is attached and use it. Mentorship is often the part that changes the business.

When to choose commercial instead

If you have six months of trading and steady deposits, commercial lending is usually faster and larger, and the price gap narrows as your file strengthens. If the money is needed this month, a microloan cannot move that fast. And if you need more than about $50,000, most programs cannot reach it, so the commercial market is the only route that fits.

Frequently asked questions

What is a microloan in Canada?

Small-scale business financing, typically under $50,000, from non-profit and community lenders rather than banks. Rates are lower than commercial small-business lending, approval takes weeks rather than days, and mentorship is often attached.

Can I get a microloan with no revenue yet?

Often yes. Several programs are built for pre-revenue and startup businesses and assess a plan rather than deposits. That is the clearest thing microloans offer that commercial lending does not.

Are microloans easier to get than business loans?

Easier on the numbers, harder on the paperwork. You will not be turned away for thin revenue, but you will be asked for a plan, a forecast and a conversation, and the decision takes weeks rather than days.
